About the Ball

Not too long ago a handful of gals had just finished up at the Forward Stride barn - mucking stalls, sidewalking in therapy classes, and grooming the horses who help heal frail bodies. Still in their muddy boots, they met for a glass of wine, reminding themselves of the Oregon Cowgirls they admired so much; those cowgirls who blazed the trails before them and taught them how to work on behalf of those less strong.

There were Vera, Barbara and Norma setting the state capitol afire, and Gert and Hanna shattering those glass ceilings. Together showing everyone the gumption, fortitude and true grit that lies inside every gal.

"We are all Cowgirls," they decided. "It's simply who we are. And we're going to throw a bonanza the likes this city has never seen; a fundraising event to top all fundraising events. We'll raise a ton of dough and give Forward Stride a leg up!"

You see, Forward Stride provides therapeutic recreation services to individuals with disabilities and medical issues across the Portland metropolitan area. Through our innovative therapeutic equine programs, we enable each individual to blossom with confidence and independence. From far and wide, the kids come to unfold like prairie wildflowers.

Several years ago, the organization started small. But we’re growing strong as an oak tree, and it’s time to put the wind at our back. Feel free to browse www.forwardstride.org to learn more about our work.

By now, everyone's excited. For one magical night, they're going to bring their horses to The Pearl. They'll trade in their riding breeches for leather chaps. They decide to choose a Cowgirl of the Year, and it'll be someone who can inspire everyone to look inside themselves and realize that, they too, have enough mighty pluck to make the west a better place.

Our secret is out. We want to be Cowgirls, discovering the exciting frontiers of the wild, wild west and doing our darndest to live our lives the best way we see fit. Join us at this benefit bonanza. You'll feel good, and have a great time too.
